Blobs, Stacks and Piles

I use blob-like forms to represent the Self or as a stand-in for aspects of the body that are uncomfortable and uncontrollable. The unstructured, blob-like form resists being fully known or contained and thus allows for possibility - the Self continuously changing and seeking new boundaries. With these forms, I was navigating my own humanity, exploring: abundance and restriction, comfort and discomfort, desire and repulsion, personal identity, my potential for change and propensity toward contradiction.

Pink Blob is a large inflatable sculpture, approximately 94 x 120 x 96 inches, representative of the body or the Self. The blob is made to look soft, pillow-like but simultaneously ominous and revolting. Its gelatinous form, scale and garish pink color create feelings of unease and also immense amusement. The contradictory responses it produces mimic that of a spectacle. The pink blob, though large in scale, appears vulnerable; it is protected and supported by wooden construction barricades, painted neutral gray, that simultaneously restrict and scrutinize the boundary defying form. A few of these barricades are equip with mirrored appendages that extend upward, referencing contraptions in the medical world created to examine the body. The mirrors reflect the pink blob but are not large enough to show the entire form and thus relate to our inability to see ourselves and our motivations or patterns clearly.

High dive #2 is part of a series of sculptures exploring the multifaceted physical and psychological aspects of the Self. The blob-like stack sits precariously atop a high dive platform creating feelings of humor, unease and tension. The platform is similar to ones we have seen in cartoons or comics by which a person is expected to plunge from intimidating heights into an extremely small container below. The sculpture is autobiographical, speaking to times in life when difficult choices present themselves and fear is a great obstacle one has to make a decision to overcome.
